Chicken Coop Construction

Welcome to the Open Book!

This is my first blog post. It's about our new chicken coop.
The reason for our building it has a story behind it.
Our last chickens had a horrid habit of eating their own eggs. Yuck! We finally got the bad ones separated from the good ones who weren't eating the eggs, and we gave the bad ones away. Lately though, we've been running a little short of eggs for breakfast... And while I was checking the eggs one day, one of the chickens was caught in the act of eating its egg. It had poked a hole in it! I snatched the chicken and threw it out of the coop! I told my mom about it and she told my dad and he said he was fed up with the old chickens and we were getting new ones. :)

We ordered 25 mixed brown egg layer hens. They will arrive as baby chicks only a few days old.

That is why we are building a new chicken coop - for the new chickens. We will keep the old ones until the new chickens start laying eggs... then, in the pot they go!!

This is us on the roof of our new chicken coop. (I'm the one in the blue T-shirt).

My dad and my brother and I are working on it together. I have enjoyed it!
This is the front view - where the main door and the doors to the nest boxes will be placed.
I'll be posting more pictures when it's done... and when the baby chicks arrive!

Bye-bye!
Steven

  3. Very interesting, my dad and I do some woodworking, but we've never made anything for the outdoors, or any buildings for that matter. :) Julia told all her readers to stop by, so that is why I'm here. Keep up the good work, and be sure to post some pictures of the chicks when they come!

  4. Congrats on getting your own blog!

I've never heard of chickens eating their own eggs. How bizarre! Hope your new ones have more common sense.

    Blessings,
